Concept

Due to the Covid Pandemic the Department of Theatre and New Dance moved all productions online for the Fall 2020 - Spring 2021 seasons. Fefu and Her Friends was the third fully virtual production. This play embraces feminism and the tole society and gender roles have on women and the enveloping struggle and fears they live with. Especially, when set in the 1930s where societal ideals had women restricted to following traditional roles. In the play we also see a duality within the female characters, some of which break those stereotypes with outspoken feminist ideals and beliefs contrary to the time period. With my sound design concept I wanted to create a naturalistic yet ominous and overall immersive soundscape bringing forth the feeling of women empowerment with music strictly by female artists and diving into the psychological minds of the women. It then transitions into darkness in the second and third act as society defeats and breaks down these women as they spiral into a deep and silent madness.
